Site Info

This website is an ongoing information centre for Hoylake Golf Club members and visitors alike. Competition results and handicap adjustments are updated weekly during the Summer season. Some pages contain a lot of information so please be patient while they load. If you would like to contribute any information about Hoylake Golf Club, you can contact the webmaster via e-mail

A Brief History of Our Club

In 1933 a group of gentlemen with a common interest in golf decided to form a new Golf Club. They decided upon the name Hoylake, and this proved to be the founding of this great club. It was not the first club to play at the Hoylake municipal golf links. This distinction goes to Grosvenor Grange Ladies GC, which was, in 1898 formed by a group of ladies from The Royal Liverpool Golf Club who desired to play golf unhindered by the social constraints of the times. The Royal Liverpool purchased some land and constructed a 9 hole course for the ladies. Some 30 years later the Parish council, wanting to increase public amenities bought the course and converted it into an 18 hole course with the aid of Mr. James Braid, one third of the legendary Triumvirate of turn of the century golfers which also included JH Taylor & Harry Vardon. The course today is largely as he designed it, with the only significant difference being the order in which we play the holes. With the Royal Liverpool GC staging the 2006 Open, there is talk of renaming the course to “The James Braid Course” or something similar.

The Club is affiliated to the English Golf Union through the Cheshire Golf Union, and as such our member’s handicaps are recognized worldwide.

We enjoy a close relationship with the course P.G.A. professional and his staff. They are always ready to help with your golfing needs and problems.

Competitions

Competitions are held each Saturday the course is open and many of the trophies we play for are reminders of past stalwarts of the Club. Our Club is well organized with over 250 members ensuring not only diverse friendships and challenges but also a financially secure future.

A copy of the current years fixtures is here to give you some idea of what our golfing season incorporates. As well as the weekly Saturday competitions, we hold regular Tuesday 12 hole competitions to encourage the social aspect of the club. Once a month we hold a full 18 hole medal mid-week medal. Of course there is also the annual singles and doubles knock out competitions.

Other arenas for our members to compete in are the team competitions; these include the Inter Club Scratch League, a league that we have had some success in, in the past few seasons. This team is usually drawn from the single figure golfers of our club, but for the higher handicaps there is the Inter Club Wirral League. A league in which the team is drawn on the basis of any body wanting to play will get the opportunity of representing the club. The fixtures are arranged on a home and away basis, usually played on a Wednesday evening, with each team playing each other twice a season. The highlights of our year include Captain’s day, President’s day, and Invitation day for which you have the opportunity to invite a friend from another club to join you in a pair’s team competition. We also have a club-organized day out to a private Golf Course for a full days golf and an excellent evening meal.

Competition Procedures

There are certain things you must do when playing in a club competition. Firstly on the day of the competition there will be a sign in sheet in the locker room. You must sign this in order to be in the competition. You must also pay the nominal entry fee, usually £2. It is a rule of the Club that a green fee must be paid to the Professional, who will then issue you with a stamped scorecard.

At the end of your round you must check that your marker has recorded your score and that you agree with his figures. Any query should be sorted out and then make sure that both yourself and your marker sign the card. The Club now uses new technology to record the player’s scores. In the clubroom a computer has been installed for the members to record their scores. At the end of the day the computer calculates the changes to your handicap, and it also keeps details like eclectic scores. Once you have entered your score into the computer you must place your completed and signed card in the competition box.

Remember it is your responsibility to check your scores are correct, and that your card is placed in the box. It is a rule of golf that any card taken out in competition MUST be returned for handicapping purposes.

It is always a good idea to check the notice boards before going out to play as there maybe one relevant to the days competition. The notice board is also the means by which Club members are kept up to date with the every day business and announcements of events. It is strongly recommended that you look at the board at least once a week. Many things will not change but there may be a new notice that needs attention.

Handicaps

It is the possession of a handicap that is recognized by the Cheshire Union and the CONGU that enables you to play in many open competitions that are held all over the UK and the world.

If you are joining from another club and that club is GONGU recognized then it is simply a matter of transferring your handicap via the 2 Handicap Secretaries. If you are joining us as a second club and wish for your handicap to remain at the other (home) club then it is your responsibility to report any scores to your home club and to notify the second club of any change of handicap (this need only be done when your handicap changes by one or more full shots).

Club Council

The Club is the members. It is administered by the Club Council, which consists of the Captain, Vice Captain, Immediate Past Captain, Secretary, Council Secretary, Treasurer, Handicap Secretary, Competition Secretary, Events Secretary, Liaison Secretary, Communications Secretary and Assistant Handicap and Competition Secretaries. The President of the club also attends meetings to pass on invaluable constitutional and general advice. The committee (apart from the Captain, the vice Captain, and the Immediate Past Captain) are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting, held usually towards the end of February each year. All members are actively encouraged to attend, to observe how the Club is operating and to raise any issues that individual members may have.

It takes a lot of work to run a successful club the size of Hoylake. The Committee tirelessly undertakes this work on your behalf.  It meets monthly, and one of its functions is to consider applications of prospective members. Normally this is a perfunctory task, but a necessary one to ensure continuity of membership. Once approved the applicant will be sent a letter confirming membership subject to paying all monies due. As has already been mentioned the Committee is elected at the A.G.M., and if you feel you want to be a part of it and have something to offer to the running of the Club, you can stand for election. New ideas are always welcome.

Subscriptions

There is an initial joining fee of £50, and then an annual subscription of £54.50 with concessions for juniors and OAPs. This fee includes membership of The ’98 Club (the body responsible for administering the private bar facilities), the fee required by the Cheshire and the English Golf Unions for associate membership (to enable you to hold a recognized handicap), the prime tee time pre-booking fee demanded by the Borough Council, and for the general running of the Club.

A small competition entry fee is levied whenever you take part in a Club competition, along with an optional ball sweep. This usually amounts to a total of £2.

This is a brief history of our Club and an over view of how we work, if you are interested in joining us please contact any of the committee via e-mail, or fill out our on-line application form here.
