Dear Members
It is with great pleasure and excitement that I welcome you
to the 2008 season.
The Captain’s Drive-In will be on Saturday 29th
March and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on
the first tee bright and early and I will be even more
interested to see where you position yourselves on the fairway
or even the rough?!
As with previous Captains I aim to play with as many of you
as possible throughout the season and therefore I ask you to
cross your name off the starting sheet at the earliest
opportunity if you are unable to play. This is very important,
not only to me but to the Club as a whole allowing those without
a time to play in the competition with other members on the day.
The competition with the Ladies will be on Saturday, 26th
July. This has become an established and enjoyable day and the
Lady Captain and I would appreciate your continued support and
encourage you all to take part - this will be the only Club
competition on that day.
The club day out this year will be at Aldersey
Green on Thursday, 6th June.
I have played there before and found it to be a fairly easygoing
and picturesque course as well as a challenging test of golf.
The Doubles Knockout format this year will be a standard Four
Ball Betterball and I intend to persuade my long standing
partner to take part again this year after several years
absence.
It is still the Committee’s wish that as many members as
possible have the opportunity to compete in a match-play event
on Finals Day in September. Qualification for the competitions
on the day will be prioritised in the following order; Singles
and Doubles Knockouts, the Captain’s team v the Professional’s
team and the Ryder Cup Match against West Hoyle Golf Club.
If any members are interested in playing in inter club games
then please remember to put your name down on the sheet for the
Wirral League matches which usually take place on a Wednesday
evening. Remember that we are not only the defending champions
this year but we are going for our ‘hat-trick’ of wins - does
this mean we’ll get to keep the trophy if we win again? As
usual, we will not be selecting players to “win at all costs” as
it’s more about enjoying your game in a match play format, even
though some of our opponents will no doubt be a little keener.
For the more serious players there will of course be the
Scratch Team matches, selection for which will be by invitation
but please add your name to the sheet to make yourself eligible.
These usually take place on Monday evenings.
Finally, I would like to finish by wishing you all a
successful and more importantly, an enjoyable golfing year.
Tom Coleman
