Dear Members,
It gives me great pleasure to
welcome you all, members old and new to the 2010 season of
Hoylake Golf Club. I joined this great club in 1979, when Stuart
Jones was Captain and he still plays today, though mainly with
the Seniors. I have served on the committee since 1998, 7 years
as Competitions Secretary meeting many members as I’ve handed
out Sweep money and balls to winners and runners-up.
The Captain’s Drive-In
this year is on Saturday 27th March, at 6.40am for the early
birds and 9.40am for our later risers. I hope by then that the
winter snow has cleared and the course has dried out
sufficiently to herald the start of a good season for weather
and a successful season for as many as possible of our members
on that opening day.
The fixture list is similar
to last years but there are some differences so PLEASE READ THE
NOTICE BOARD or check the website as these are the ways by which
the Committee will communicate with Club members.
There
will be no competition on Saturday 5th June as the course will
be closed for the Ladies Municipal Championships. The following
Friday, 11th June, the Club day out will be at EATON GOLF CLUB
and I hope as many of you as possible, will join me to enjoy
this lovely course. Please see the notice board for further
details. On Saturday 19th June, the course will be closed for
THE WEST WIRRAL OPEN so book your place early!
July is a busy month with
Captain’s Day on the 10th, the Competition with the Ladies on
the 17th and President’s Day on the 31st.
On the 14th of August we
have the Club Championship, 36 Holes off scratch handicap, so I
hope we’ll have lots of low handicap members who are fit by
the middle of August. For lesser mortals (including me)
there’s the usual 18 Hole medal competition.
September 18th brings
FINALS DAY, with the final of the Knock-Outs, Singles and Pairs,
the Captain's team v the Pro's team, and the start of the Ryder
Cup, which continues and finishes on Sunday 19th. The format for
the Rosenberg Cup (Pairs Knock-Out) will be Four Ball Better
Ball, as I believe this is the best and fairest format for a
pairs event.
The last fixture of the
year is on 5th November with 18 holes, Annual Dinner and Prize
Presentation at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. I’m so pleased
to be back at what is considered to be the best venue for our
end of year celebrations.
Wirral League matches are a
very enjoyable part of Municipal Golf on the Wirral when we play
home and away at
Arrowe
Park
, Brackenwood, Ellesmere Port,
The Warren
and West Hoyle Golf Clubs. A little socialising after the match
always adds to the enjoyment of the day and I recommend that you
take part and add your name to the list when it goes on the
notice board. I think we must be about due to win the League
again this year?
The handicap system this
year has been altered slightly by the English Golf Union and may
affect those of you who play in away competitions. You will now
need to complete 3 rounds of golf at your Home Club and submit
the cards, in order to maintain your handicap as 'active'.
A Prayer to the Golfing
Gods. Last year we enjoyed some great weather under Dave
Denton’s Captaincy and I would like some more of the same
please, for the 2010 season!
This year, as many of our previous Captains have done, I wish to
join as many of you as possible for your Saturday morning rounds
throughout the season. So please remember to cross your name off
the Starting Sheet if you can’t play on the day.
Finally, let me wish all
of you a very enjoyable and successful year of Golf.
Cheers
Paul
G. Davies
Captain 2010
